Today, August 16, the first race day at the “Smeceres sils” track in Madona came to an end, as sidecar motocross and quadcross riders completed their qualification heats. The local favorites – brothers Daniels and Bruno Lielbārži – delivered a strong performance, setting the fastest time in qualification. In the European Quadcross Championship, Reinis Bicāns and Kārlis Neija also impressed, securing the 2nd and 3rd fastest times in their class.
A total of 26 sidecar crews lined up today for the FIM Sidecar Motocross World Championship. In Group A, the fastest lap was set by the home riders Daniels and Bruno Lielbārži (25:46.58; +4 seconds). The brothers highlighted the importance of home support ahead of tomorrow’s finals: “The start went well – we moved into P3, then quickly up to P2. From there, we fought for the lead, and a bit of luck was on our side as Koen Hermans’ crew faced technical problems. This allowed us to ride our own rhythm, save energy, and win our group race – giving us a strong start position for tomorrow. A huge thank you to everyone supporting us today – we’ll need your voices again tomorrow!” said Daniels Lielbārdis.
In Group B, the other three Latvian sidecar crews competed: Kaspars Lubgans/Oskars Dūdens finished 9th, Jurģis Mačs/Artis Fjodorovs 11th, and Rihards Rupeiks/Roberts Užāns 12th.
In the European Quadcross Championship, Reinis Bicāns came within less than a second of the leader, finishing 2nd in qualification, while Kārlis Neija claimed 3rd place. Bicāns commented: “It was an exciting day – the track was well prepared, we gave it our best, and the fans really made a difference from the sidelines. Now it’s about recovery and focus for tomorrow.” Italian rider Patrick Turrini, currently 2nd in the championship standings, was fastest today. Kārlis Lizanders finished 9th in qualification, while Iļja Dektjarjovs placed 12th.
